Abstract:

Researcher-practitioners engage in research and evaluation studies to understand user needs and information-seeking behavior, to improve library services, and to gather evidence for the development of new programs. This workshop is intended for library practitioners who are interested in expanding their research and assessment skills and exploring the possibilities of new research projects. The presenters will provide an overview of social sciences research methods applicable to the library and information science field, including quantitative and qualitative approaches. The workshop will provide the participants with opportunities to discuss their own research and evaluation and practice skills in designing research projects, whether they are starting with just an idea or are already working on a research project. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and interact directly with the presenters throughout the workshop. Whether interested in survey design, how to conduct interviews, or qualitative data analysis, this workshop will provide something for everyone.

As a result of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Formulate a research problem and research questions
  • Select an appropriate research methodology
  • Develop an interview protocol
  • Consider different approaches to data collection and analysis
  • Become familiar with dedoose, online software for qualitative data analysis.
