After completing this topic, the student will learn the key issues for implementing a collection development policy for a digital library and the criteria and elements to develop a digital collection with: - Material purchased from suppliers. - Digitized material property of library. - Digital born material from own institution. - Digital material obtained from third parties and hyperlinks. |
The student will research trough the literature and the sites listed down below to prepare material for discussion in class about the following: 1. The basis of collection development policies. 2. The steps to develop a digital collection for different collection materials. 3. Observed different types of criteria to digitize. 4. Own list of criteria considered the most useful by the student to digitize a certain selected collection as example; mixing criteria of different sites is recommended. 5. - His knowledge and experience on the subject from work, discussion with colleagues, readings, or projects. |
Description:
The differnt sources and methods to build of digital collections, either with digital born or digitized materials is something that must be understood by all modern librarians. Therefore the importance to establish a development policy for digital collections and its study here. We will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of digitizing a certain collection, and how, why and when to do so. When and how to digitize for preserving and when to distribute, and the implications implied by each of these processes. Which are the criteria for digitizing materials that should govern any decision in this regard.
Moreover, must be understood the sources and criteria governing the acquisition of third party materials, whether commercial providers or not. What are the advantages of both material types and sources. With all these elements, the student should be able to fully understand the strategies for developing a digital collection in a library of this type.
