Research

Dr. Juan Voutssas M. is currently a Senior researcher at the Institute of the Library and Information Science Research (IIBI) within National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) since 1993. His work has always been around Information and Communication Technology -ICT- related to various different applications of this discipline and its relationship with other information sciences. Among other issues, has been busy studying: algorithms for storage and retrieval of information, metalanguages, especially XML and its application in libraries and archives; digital and semantic libraries; models of digital libraries, digitization of traditional collections, digital publications; digital and semantic archives and preservation of digital documents, especially in the long term.

He has coordinated more than forty projects, among them, he coordinated the applied projects "LIBRUNAM": automated library system for UNAM, "e-voting" and "digital signature" at UNAM; the latter won in 2007 2nd. place in the "National Award in Innovative Developments from Public Sector Organizations" awarded by "Information Week" and "Netmedia Research" enterprises at Mexico. He also coordinated in 2000 at UNAM the "e-journal" project, aimed to create and distribute the first academic set of mexican electronic journals, full text, open-access. Between 1997 and 2008 coordinated the design, development and maintenance of the main portal of UNAM "www.unam.mx". This site won the 2000 "Ibest" prize and in 2004 won the "Yahoo" prize, both as best website in Mexico.

He was a member of the UNAM's Top IT Advisory Council for nineteen years and a member of its Supercomputing Committee through three years, as well as several other library Councils for various institutions. He has been advisor on Information and Communications Technologies, and/or Libraries and Archives for ICANN (Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers asigned), the University of Colima, the Colegio de Mexico, The National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT), The Federal Institute for Elections (IFE), The Social Sciences and Humanities Schools Certifying Councils (ACCECISO and SINAES), The National Commision for Mexico City High Schools Admission (COMIPEMS), The Mexican People Registry (RENAPO), The National Supreme Court of Justice, etc.

From 2008 to 2012 he was coordinating the Mexican TEAM of project "InterPARES," an international research group which includesmany countries and regions on the issue of preservation of digital archives and their long term authentic preservation. Since 2012 he coordinates the Latin American TEAM of this project.
