“Operating Systems and ICT Platforms”
Module 2. ICT. Hardware:
Introduction | Specific subject objectives | Teaching strategies |
2 ICT. Hardware. 2.1 CPU's: RISC' CISC, Motherboards, Servers. 2.2 Main Memory; secondary memory. 2.3 Display and printing devices. 2.4 Ports. 2.5 Accesories. 2.6 Concept of ICT platform; types. |
Upon completion of this subject, students will learn the general aspects of all parts that build typical computer equipments used in libraries and archives, in order to understand their characteristics, performance, uses and limitations when used in applications inside such institutions. Students must understand clearly the ICT computational platform concept and describe their various types. |
The student will research trough the literature and the sites listed down below to prepare material for discussion in class about the following: 1.- Main types of CPU's, Motherboards; their characteristics, limitations and applicacions. 2.- Function of RAM memory, types, capacities, speeds, units y characteristics. 3.- Function of secondary memory, types, capacities, speeds, units y characteristics 4.- Display and printing devices, types, capacities, speeds, units y characteristics. 5.- Ports, bays, accesories. 6.- Definition of a ICT computational platform; description of types, blendings, advantages an disadvantages, uses in libraries and archives. Examples. 7.- His knowledge and experience on the subject from work, discussion with colleagues, readings, or projects. |
Description:
The first type of component to study in the area of ICT is hardware or equipment. The student will learn the types of computers and devices used in libraries and archives: their capabilities, uses and limitations; in order to analyze, compare and select properly the ideal equipment for a certain task within a library or archive.
It is also necessary to know in detail all the main parts of these devices: their capabilities, limitations and interactions between them to understand clearly how they are selected and integrated into a computer for an efficient and harmonious, yet economical performance.

6.- Search also in advertising leaflets, newspapers, magazines, Web sites, etc., offers and descriptions of computer equipment. Make sure you understand each and every one of the descriptions of parts in there, in order to be able to make a rational analysis and comparisons of such equipment beyond price.
