Module 4. ICT. Networks:
Introduction | Specific subject objectives | Teaching strategies |
4 ICT. Networks. 4.1 Definition and networks topologies. LAN, MAN, WAN networks. 4.2 Internet, libraries and archives: evolution, IP's, Names & numbers, Carrier, ISP, bandwidth. 4.3 Network protocols: TCP/IP, e-mail (SMTP), FTP P2P, Telnet, WWW, VoIP, IPTV. 4.4 Network devices: Hubs, modems, switchs, routers, conectors, etc. 4.5 Mobiles networks: services, dimensions, trends, webcast, podcast, etc. |
Upon completion of this item, the students will gain general knowledge about the different types of networks in contemporary institutions, especially the Internet and its services: mail, file transfer, remote access, and so on. Obviusly, libraries and archives are the main focus. Also the knowledge that a library or archive manager should possess is studied in order to identify and cope with the problems arising from the use of networks: protocols, wireless networks, services through mobile internet service providers and carriers, bandwidth, IP addresses, use of hubs, switches, routers, etc., under a focus of practical use in libraries and archives. |
The student will research trough the literature and the sites listed down below to prepare material for discussion in class about the following: 1.- What is a ICT network; types, topologies and ranges. 2. Describe briefly the Internet: characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Library and Archive uses through the net. 3.- Describe briefly the main characteristics and types of network protocols: the Web, e-mail (SMTP), TCP/IP, Telnet, FTP, P2P, VoIP, etc. 4. Describe briefly the main characteristics and types of network devices used in libraries and archives: routers, modems, hubs, etc. 5. Describe the current services that can be offered to library and archive users nowadays based on mobile devices and wireless networks. 6.- His knowledge and experience on the subject from work, discussion with colleagues, readings, or projects. |
Description:
The last but not least type of component to study in the area of ICT is networks, as digital libraries and archives base much of their work on this concept. It is necessary for the administrator of these institutions to know the basic concepts on which institutional networks are built, specially the Internet. From this knowledge, be able to identify applications, services, problems related to his network, and be able to design and / or improve an existing network. We study in detail current trends in mobile computing, in order to anticipate this type of applications and future demands on services. Since networking subject it's enormous both in size and specialization, the focus of this chapter is practical and is aimed at building capacities in students decisions as managers.
