Upon completion of this item, the student will gain general knowledge about the different types of systems and programs used in computer equipment in libraries and archives: operating systems and types, general programs used for common office functions (offimatic, browser, players, ploters, etc.) and finally the special programs found in libraries and archives. Types, costs, open standards. | The student will research trough the literature and the sites listed down below to prepare material for discussion in class about the following: 1.- Concept of operating system: functions, types. 2.- Describe different operating systems, families, characteristicas, advantages and disadvantages (Windows, UNIX, Linux, etc.) 3.- Describe characteristicas, costs, advantages and disadvantages about general purpose programs in institutions. (Offimatics, browsers, viewers, players, editors, OCR, etc. 4.- Describe characteristicas, costs, advantages and disadvantages about specific purpose programs in libraries and archives. 5.- His knowledge and experience on the subject from work, discussion with colleagues, readings, or projects. |
Description:
The next type of component to study in the area of ICT is the "Software" or programs and / or applications. The student will learn types of operating systems and other general and specific softwares used in libraries and archives: their types, capabilities, uses, costs and limitations, in order to analyze, compare and select properly the ideal operating system and software for a certain task within a library or archive.
